The Dark Moon Phase
The Dark Moon time - the time of bleeding. This lunar phase is sometimes called the New Moon, though I prefer the term Dark Moon—as we are referring to the time where the Moon has no light to reflect, she is hidden, in the dark.
The prevailing messages shared with young people as they learn about reproductive health and this particular part of the menstrual cycle is how “unclean” it is, while encouraging secrecy and shame. I truly believe that one of the greatest healing processes for women to be able to fully embody their power in this world, is in the work of understanding and owning the sacred space of the bleed time.
In ancient cultures, where artificial lighting, chronic stress, and detrimental food systems weren’t wreaking havoc on wombs worldwide - women’s body’s were deeply synced with the cycles of the moon, ovulating on the Full Moon and bleeding on the Dark Moon. This time was recognized as highly potent, magical and full of wisdom.
The energy of the Dark Moon is just that - dark. It is inwards, quiet, the space of direct connection with Spirit and Intuition. It is a time of rest, and an absolutely necessary space for the physical, emotional and spiritual bodies to be replenished. Without this “down time,” without fully acknowledging the seasons within the body, imbalance is inevitable.
The same goes for the Dark Moon (bleeding) phase of the menstrual cycle.
The first physical step I actually took towards creating this Kit was when I made my very first “Dark Moon” tea blend over a year ago. This blend has grown greatly since that very first simple mix of Raspberry leaf, Peppermint, Lady’s Mantle and Rose Petals.
For the Garden of the Moon’s “Dark Moon Tisane” I wanted to reflect the wintertime feeling, and ensure that the blend was warming, supportive to the digestive system, and of course tonifying and cleansing to the uterus. Flavor-wise, Clove, Cinnamon and Orange peel are the forerunners and encourage warmth and circulation. Mugwort brings a slight bitterness for digestive aid, while Crampbark and Lady’s Mantle are the reproductive organ allies. Rose petals were chosen for their beautiful feminine energy and scent, while hibiscus lends its astringent flavor and adds a magical blood-red color to the infusion.
The Plant Ally for the Dark Moon phase is none other than the great space-holder of cycles - Motherwort. It was a proverbial “no-brainer” as I had been in awe of her during the summer I was channeling the creation of these kits, while observing the way she shape-shifted seamlessly from youthful green buds, to flowering in her exuberant expression of creativity, and finally making her thorns known for all who did not treat her with the reverence deserved for those sage-ones among us. When I first sat with the Dark Moon Essence of Motherwort it was like being in a classroom with a loving old schoolmarm - wise, concise and knowledgeable.
Here is Motherwort’s message:
